Interplay of Quantum Criticality and Geometric Frustration in Columbite
Motivated by CoNb2O6 (belonging to the columbite family of minerals), we
theoretically study the physics of quantum ferromagnetic Ising chains coupled
anti-ferromagnetically on a triangular lattice in the plane perpendicular to
the chain direction. We combine exact solutions of the chain physics with
perturbative approximations for the transverse couplings. When the triangular
lattice has an isosceles distortion (which occurs in the real material), the
T=0 phase diagram is rich with five different states of matter: ferrimagnetic,
N\'eel, anti-ferromagnetic, paramagnetic and incommensurate phases, separated
by quantum phase transitions. Implications of our results to experiments on
CoNb2O6 are discussed
Efimov physics beyond three particles
Efimov physics originally refers to a system of three particles. Here we
review recent theoretical progress seeking for manifestations of Efimov physics
in systems composed of more than three particles. Clusters of more than three
bosons are tied to each Efimov trimer, but no independent Efimov physics exists
there beyond three bosons. The case of a few heavy fermions interacting with a
lighter atom is also considered, where the mass ratio of the constituent
particles plays a significant role. Following Efimov's study of the (2+1)
system, the (3+1) system was shown to have its own critical mass ratio to
become Efimovian. We show that the (4+1) system becomes Efimovian at a mass
ratio which is smaller than its sub-systems thresholds, giving a pure five-body
Efimov effect. The (5+1) and (6+1) systems are also discussed, and we show the
absence of 6- and 7-body Efimov physics there
Evidence of the Coulomb force effects in the cross sections of the deuteron-proton breakup at 130 MeV
High precision cross-section data of the deuteron-proton breakup reaction at
130 MeV deuteron energy are compared with the theoretical predictions obtained
with a coupled-channel extension of the CD Bonn potential with virtual
Delta-isobar excitation, without and with inclusion of the long-range Coulomb
force. The Coulomb effect is studied on the basis of the cross-section data
set, extended in this work to about 1500 data points by including breakup
geometries characterized by small polar angles of the two protons. The
experimental data clearly prefer predictions obtained with the Coulomb
interaction included. The strongest effects are observed in regions in which
the relative energy of the two protons is the smallest.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Physics Letters
A new insight for monitoring ungulates : density surface modelling of roe deer in a Mediterranean habitat
We would like to thank the University of Aveiro (Department of Biology) and FCT/MEC for the financial support to CESAM RU (UID/AMB/50017) through national funds and, where applicable, co-financed by the FEDER, within the PT2020 Partnership Agreement. TAM is partially funded by FCT, Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, Portugal, through the project UID/MAT/00006/2013.Ungulates are especially difficult to monitor, and population estimates are challenging to obtain; nevertheless, such information is fundamental for effective management. This is particularly important for expanding species such as roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), whose populations dramatically increased in number and geographic distribution over the last decades. In an attempt to follow population trends and assess species ecology, important methodological advances were recently achieved by combining line or point sampling with geographic information systems (GIS). In this study, we combined density surface modelling (DSM) with line transect survey to predict roe deer density in northeastern Portugal. This was based on modelling pellet group counts as a function of environmental factors while taking into account the probability of detecting pellets and conversion factors to relate pellet density to animal density. We estimated a global density of 3.01 animals/100 ha (95 % CI 0.37–3.51) with a 32.82 % CV. Roe deer densities increased with increasing distance to roads as well as with higher percentage of cover areas and decreased with increasing distance to human populations. This recently developed spatial method can be advantageous to predict density over space through the identification of key factors influencing species abundance. Furthermore, surface maps for subset areas will enable to visually depict abundance distribution of wild populations. This will enable the assessment of areas where ungulate impacts should be minimized, allowing an adaptive management through time.PostprintPeer reviewe
Cross Sections of the Deuteron-Proton Breakup at 130 MeV:A Probe of Three-Nucleon System Dynamics
Three-nucleon system dynamics can be investigated quantitatively by comparing observables calculated with the use of Faddeev equations with results of precise measurements. Proper description of the experimental data can be achieved only if the dynamical models include, in addition to the nucleon-nucleon interaction, subtle effects of suppressed degrees of freedom, effectively introduced by means of genuine three-nucleon forces. A large set of high precision, exclusive cross-section data for the (1)H(d,pp)n breakup reaction at 130 MeV contributes significantly to constrain the physical assumptions underlying the theoretical interaction models. Comparison of nearly 1,800 cross section data points with the predictions using nuclear interactions generated in various ways, allowed to establish importance of including both, the three-nucleon and the Coulomb forces to significantly improve the description of the whole data set
Vector and tensor analyzing powers in deuteron-proton breakup at 130 MeV
High-precision data for vector and tensor analyzing powers for the 1H(d,pp)n reaction at a 130-MeV deuteron beam energy have been measured over a large part of the phase space. Theoretical predictions based on various approaches to describe the three nucleon (3N) system reproduce very well the vector analyzing power data and no three-nucleon force effect is observed for these observables. Tensor analyzing powers are also very well reproduced by calculations in almost the whole studied region, but locally certain discrepancies are observed. For Axy such discrepancies usually appear, or are enhanced, when model 3N forces, TM99 or Urbana, are included. Problems of all theoretical approaches with describing Axx and Ayy are limited to very small kinematical regions, usually characterized by the lowest energy of the relative motion of the two protons
Three-Nucleon Force Effects in Nucleon Induced Deuteron Breakup: Predictions of Current Models (I)
An extensive study of three-nucleon force effects in the entire phase space
of the nucleon-deuteron breakup process, for energies from above the deuteron
breakup threshold up to 200 MeV, has been performed. 3N Faddeev equations have
been solved rigorously using the modern high precision nucleon-nucleon
potentials AV18, CD Bonn, Nijm I, II and Nijm 93, and also adding 3N forces. We
compare predictions for cross sections and various polarization observables
when NN forces are used alone or when the two pion-exchange Tucson-Melbourne
3NF was combined with each of them. In addition AV18 was combined with the
Urbana IX 3NF and CD Bonn with the TM' 3NF, which is a modified version of the
TM 3NF, more consistent with chiral symmetry. Large but generally model
dependent 3NF effects have been found in certain breakup configurations,
especially at the higher energies, both for cross sections and spin
observables. These results demonstrate the usefulness of the kinematically
complete breakup reaction in testing the proper structure of 3N forces.Comment: 42 pages, 20 ps figures, 2 gif figure
Single electron emission in two-phase xenon with application to the detection of coherent neutrino-nucleus scattering
We present an experimental study of single electron emission in ZEPLIN-III, a
two-phase xenon experiment built to search for dark matter WIMPs, and discuss
applications enabled by the excellent signal-to-noise ratio achieved in
detecting this signature. Firstly, we demonstrate a practical method for
precise measurement of the free electron lifetime in liquid xenon during normal
operation of these detectors. Then, using a realistic detector response model
and backgrounds, we assess the feasibility of deploying such an instrument for
measuring coherent neutrino-nucleus elastic scattering using the ionisation
channel in the few-electron regime. We conclude that it should be possible to
measure this elusive neutrino signature above an ionisation threshold of
3 electrons both at a stopped pion source and at a nuclear reactor.
Detectable signal rates are larger in the reactor case, but the triggered
measurement and harder recoil energy spectrum afforded by the accelerator
source enable lower overall background and fiducialisation of the active
